Saving Trees, Water, Landfill Space and Electricity

Have You Ever Wondered What You Could Be Saving

No, we’re not talking about how to get the latest and greatest deal or Black Friday Sale (even though by now I’m sure you’re already sick of hearing about it.) We are talking about a much bigger cause- helping to save the environment!

According to the EPA “Paper accounts for more than a half of all recyclables collected in the US, by weight. About forty-four million tons of paper and paperboard were recovered in 2012—a recycling rate of about 65 percent.” Only 65% that’s a ridiculously low number considering how easy it is to recycle.

That is where we come in our new calculator will help you keep track of how many trees, water, landfill space, and electricity will save by simply shredding your paper. It doesn’t sound like much but over time it can make a huge impact on the environment.

So How Much Impact Do We Have?

Studio shot of a young furious businesswoman stuck in a pile ofWe all accumulate a lot of paper. In the US alone we go through about 69 million tons of it a year. If all of that was shredded there would be an impact of:

  • 1,173,000,020 mature trees
  • 483,007,217,108 gallons of water
  • 206,999,978 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 137,999,992 barrels of oil
  • 282,902,812,628 kilowatt hours of electricity

But how is this for a more realistic approach. Once again, according to the EPA “In 2010, the amount of paper recovered for recycling averaged 334 pounds for each person living in the US, according to the American Forest & Paper Association.” 334 pounds is a lot. With this calculator we can easily tell how much that actually is benefiting the environment! The impact of this number is as follows:

  • 3 mature trees
  • 1,169 gallons of water
  • 1 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 685 kilowatt hours of electricity

All of that and for only one person! With a population of 319,077,000 the numbers change dramatically:

  • 957,231,000 mature trees
  • 373001000000 gallons of water
  • 319,077,000 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 218,567,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity

How crazy is that! What if more people knew about this? Any why don’t they? All you have to do is simply share this calculations everywhere that you can. Put it on Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, or shout it from the rooftops! Make sure you are doing your part to get the word out and help save trees.
